Local Update on Destin Beaches After Hurricane Sally

Our club of Dailey Insiders get the news and information first regarding South Walton and Destin's beaches direct from the locals who live and work here. We're all relieved to say good-bye to Sally and are blessed that most businesses, vacation rentals, and our beaches fared well. Here’s what our team of locals have to share about the status of Destin, Florida post-Hurricane Sally:

Our Beaches are Open.

The beaches look a little different right now while they rebuild, however most public and neighborhood beach accesses are open and suffered little to no damage. Debris removal is underway and beachgoers should be cautious when walking the beach or swimming. Beach bonfires are suspended but permitting should reopen soon. Beach vendors are getting back up and running, and Newman-Dailey rentals, which include complimentary beach service, will have this service available.   

Surf Conditions.

Local officials continue to update flag conditions twice daily. Yellow flags were flying on Saturday advising swimmers to continue to use caution as surf conditions were moderate and there may be remaining debris in Gulf waters. Be Local. Act Local.

Join local efforts to clean up after Sally. You can help by removing trash and small debris from the beach when you go for a walk. Or help Mother Nature by covering exposed sea oats. Sea oats are highly valued as a dune stabilizer and important protection from storms. Many sea oats were ripped out and exposed during the high surf. This species is very drought tolerant and by covering exposed roots with moist sand these native plants will have a chance of surviving and helping rebuild the dunes faster.

Vacation Rentals Fared Well.

Our collection of vacation rental homes and condominiums fared well with only a few rentals experiencing leaks and minor water damage from the storm. We’re blessed to report that the majority of our rentals are in great shape, however, some property amenities have been temporarily closed, including public restrooms and community pools, while repairs are made. If you have a reservation at a property that was impacted, a Newman-Dailey team member will be in touch with you. Our team is back at the office and we're ready to welcome you back and get you settled in for your Destin vacation.

Local Businesses are Open

While there is always an exception to the rule, almost all local businesses are open. COVID-19 guidelines remain in effect at area restaurants and stores. All residents are encouraged to continue to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Impacts on Roadways and Travel

Sally brought more rain than we needed and there is still flooding in low lying areas and some bridges and roads are closed. I-10 has reopened. However, the Pensacola Bay Bridge suffered damage.
